What Is Breathwork

Our Approach

Where science meets spirituality.

As industry leaders, we are dedicated to empowering individuals with a therapeutic wellness tool to experience profound and lasting change. Our approach to breathwork focuses on helping people understand the science, biology, and spirituality of how breathwork can transform our life.

Science

Breathing is automatic. It is controlled by the respiratory center of the brain. When we feel stressed, our breathing pattern shifts as part of our "fight-or-flight" response.

When we are in a stress response, we tend to take shallow breaths, using their shoulders rather than diaphragm to move air through their lungs. This type of breathing disrupts the balance of gasses in the body and worsens the physical symptoms of stress.

Fortunately, we have the power to deliberately change our breathing. Scientific studies show that the physiological benefits of breathwork include increased circulation and oxygen, which helps the nervous system move into a 'rest and digest' or parasympathetic state.

When we deepen and slow down the breath from its usual shallow pattern, we allow more oxygen to enter each cell, thus lowering adrenaline and cortisol levels.

When breath moves through the body, it alters our brain chemistry, which changes our brain function. When we change our brain function, we can change the way we show up and operate in life.

Spirituality

The transformative power of breath has been understood and widely practiced by Yogis and Shamans since ancient times.

For centuries, people have sought self-healing, spiritual awakening, and meditative relaxation through breathing techniques. Breathwork has roots in Eastern practices like Buddhism, Yoga, and Tai Chi.

Guided breathwork has an irrefutable way of tapping into the subconscious mind. As you learn to breathe more freely and reset your nervous system, you will be able to access deeper feelings and uncover your fears, traumas, and limitations.

During your breathwork practice, you’ll take in a surplus of oxygen which lowers the levels of CO2 in the brain. This allows you to enter a self-induced non-routine state of consciousness where memories and emotions can surface. These experiences can then be reframed or released.

The ultimate goal is to show up in the world with greater peace, purpose, and self-compassion. When we tap into the truth of our inner self, it resonates with the outerworld. When we take responsibility for our own wellbeing, we heal the collective.

Breathwork sessions can take place in-person or from the comfort of your own home via online video chat with your facilitator.

Somatic Healing

When we use the word “somatic,” we’re referring to something related to the body.

Somatic healing involves working with the body to support a deep level of self-awareness and improve emotional regulation. Breathwork is a somatic practice that has long been considered one of the most powerful healing modalities.

When we’re able to introduce a somatic healing experience to our daily practice, we are capable of shifting on a cellular level. After all, we don’t think our way to healthier physiological responses—we do it by feeling.

The benefits of breathwork practice can offer profound and dramatic healing.

FAQs

Below are some of the most common questions we get about breathwork and somatic healing. If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact us.

  • Before coming in for your session it is best to have a clear idea of your intention. Create space for yourself that day to feel into what you desire out of your session, and ensure you have the evening off to rest and relax if possible.

Having a clear body is very important. No alcohol or substances 48 hours prior to your session. This allows the body to be open and connected. It is also best not to eat too close to your session, and if so lightly. Dress comfy, sweats and loose fitting clothing is best. Please let me know of any pre-existing conditions ahead of time.

  • We begin with 15-20 mins where you can share about yourself and your life. We then create an intention and you will learn about the breath pattern and what you can expect in your journey. You will be breathing for 60 mins guided by music and my voice/hands on facilitation.

Afterwards there is quiet time to integrate and rest your body, followed by 20 mins to share about your experience. Each and every session is completely different, and will take you into new areas within yourself. Because of that we get to keep showing up with new eyes and create new change in our lives.

  • During a session, your emotional body undergoes a big inner transformation. It is important to honour this experience and give it time to settle and integrate into your life. In the coming days, you may experience a sense of lightness, increased joy, and a substantial surge in energy - revel in this incredible space and embrace the newfound dimensions you've cultivated in your life.

It's also possible that more emotions will surface following your session. This is an integral part of the process, and the invitation is to greet whatever emotions emerge with compassion and allow them to keep moving.

You will be provided with after-care recommendations including, a quiet evening or down time, taking a long hot shower or epsom salt bath, eating nourishing food, hydrating and avoiding alcohol.

  • 48 hour notice is required for cancellations or booking changes, otherwise charges may apply.

  • We would need to speak more and do a phone/video consultation if you have a history of high blood pressure, concussions, any forms of cancer, drug or alcohol abuse, and/or any serious mental health issues.
